In 2009, Fr. Chiramel embarked on his profound mission to promote organ donation through the selfless act of donating his kidney to Gopinathan Chakkamadathil, an impoverished electrician of a different faith. This transformative gesture marked the inception of his dedicated journey to raise awareness and inspire individuals about the significance of organ donation.

The Kidney Federation of India (KFI) was established with the mission of aiding individuals suffering from kidney failure. Under his leadership and direction, we organize free medical camps and conduct awareness sessions. KFI also extends financial and emotional support to patients on a case-by-case basis, ensuring the authenticity and genuineness of our assistance.

Fr. Chiramel led and organized a series of four statewide campaigns in Kerala called “Manava Karunya Yathra”. The second one was inaugurated by the late President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. These campaigns aimed to raise awareness about organ donation and encourage individuals to pledge their consent for organ donation. Remarkably, as a result of these efforts, a total of one million signed consent letters were collected, illustrating the substantial impact and success of these initiatives.

Under the dedicated leadership of Fr. Chiramel, a remarkable achievement was realized in the Kerala village of Pootharakkal, located in the Trichur district. This achievement involved the attainment of complete literacy in organ donation within the village, a truly extraordinary feat. Every single resident of Pootharakkal willingly and enthusiastically filled out consent forms expressing their willingness to donate their organs upon their passing. This achievement was acknowledged in the Limca Book of Records, highlighting its exceptional nature. It stands as proof of the influence of community mobilization and Fr. Chiramel’s commitment to promoting organ donation and saving lives through his leadership and advocacy

Fr. Chiramel has collaborated closely with NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization), which operates under the aegis of the Government of India. In this capacity, he has served as an organ donation ambassador.

His efforts as an ambassador have contributed significantly to the cause of organ donation, ultimately helping to save and improve countless lives.
